You can do both, but make sure that the image you will post isn't too big, so the page won't take forever to load.

You can post the link to an image:
http://mmcdn1.hosting-media.net/jpg128/ ... 158800.jpg

and to put the image in your message, you need to add
--------[/img]
around the link. There's a button for that (Img), just above the message box.
Yes, the picture has to be hosted on a website somewhere.

You have to do the same thing if you want to put an image as a signature under your posts:
User Control Panel + Profile tab + Edit signature = you can put the link to your signature between the [img] codes.

So you could use the to, for instance, put a video in a post that would play inside it, then? Or would you use the [flash=][/flash] for that?

Try it. I've never posted a video directly in a message, just the link to it, so I don't know.
