I really need to investigate Joanna Newson, and I think I'll start with her latest album which has been receiving amazing reviews (feel free to open a Joanna Newsom thread, Jessel

)
The thing I love most about Natasha is the sense (and you probably know what I mean here) that she is a real
artist. From the visual aspects, to the performance, to the lyrics...her songs are like abstract dreams or visions at times, and they feel like unique, personal ideas that are left uncompromised. They're not just pop songs built around some predetermined structure. The closest she has come to that was "Daniel", which she has said was her attempt to write a really classic sounding pop song of the 80s. And still she filled it with abstract themes based around the Karate Kid movie of the 80s.
But listen to tracks like "Wilderness", and I just get a shiver as soon as she starts...
"I took my leaves to the sea..."
It's deep, personal, dreamy folk music. (And I sense a similarity in what I've heard of Joanna Newsom's stuff so far too)
