Song of the Week 9/26/10 : WORLD ON FIRE

Post by Mooncrown » Mon Jun 21, 2010 2:13 am

This is a topic I hope will continue in the future. We post a Sarah song every week and we all talk about our opinions, memories, and feelings about it whether negative or positive. I will volunteer to post each week or we can certainly take turns if someone else wants to do it. I picked this week's song by hitting shuffle on my Ipod.

This song sounds very Celtic to me, more so than any other song in her catalogue. Musically this was different from the songs on Touch, but I see it as a natural progression. Her voice is so pure and had a longing in it. I'm not sure what the inspiration for this song was but it seems like it has deep meaning for her in the way she sings it. It's one of those songs that tranports me to another place and time and that place and time can be different every time-it's timeless I think is what I'm trying to say, a true Sarah classic. Would love to hear her do this in concert now and how it would sound but that probably won't happen

Favorite lyric: We were mesmerized by the lull of the night
Favorite vocal or musical moment: When she sings " In the face of the blinding sun"
One word to describe this song: Soothing

So what are your thoughts on this song? Love it? Hate It? Indifferent? Please share!

This is a beautiful tune and I like the lyrics so much. My favorite version of this song is a live acoustic radio performance she did way back in '91. I'm not so sure about the Celtic vibe but I just don't feel it. It's more of a folky tune to me.
One little leaf adrift in the breeze, refuses to fall from the sky
Blown by the wind it clings to the tree, unwilling to wither and die...

When I listen to it, I feel like I'm in the south seas or some place like that. It's an up tempo beat song and pleasant. A bring me up song and a good early Sarah tune.

I agree. Much of her pre-FTE songs such as Steaming sounds like PG.

This song is really good. It also takes me to another place, it makes me feel free and really hopeful for better things. I use to play it with my guitar and sing along and it does give me a sense of peace, like I was in a beach just hearing the waves touching the sand....

I wish I could say much about this track, but haven't really thought it out well. This song comes from an era where Sarah's voice was as powerful as the instruments played. I love the guitar strumming on this track (all thanks to Bill Dillon). I enjoy the Live EP version of this song as much as the album version. Great track overall, no complaints

I love this song, it's so perfect, the lyrics, the melody, Sarah's voice, everything <3 It kind of makes me feel light and free, it reminds me of the sea breeze...
And I totally agree with Mooncrown, this song definitely has a Celtic vibe ;)

This song is perfect for road trips. Come to think of it all of her music is pretty good to have
in the car on a long drive - especially Sweet Surrender - put the top down and let your hair fly!

I love the feeling peace and serenity that comes with the song. The imagery is also fantastic.

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Thoreau:
"... yet, like the lake, my serenity is rippled, but not ruffled."
