Guilty pleasures (songs you "shouldn't" like, but do)

Post by Magellan » Sun May 23, 2010 1:15 am

And another thread, then I'll shut up ;)

Being Sarah fans, we all value the Tortured Artist (torturus artisticus). Sarah, Tori, Kate yada yada yada...
Many of us hate The Direction The Music Industry Is Going TM, resent what happened after Lilith Fair (i.e. pre-packed pop took over the world again), and a small percentage of us have even considered setting fire to the headquarters of a record company or six.

But sometimes, we (or perhaps I) are shocked to find ourselves enjoying...something we shouldn't. Like eating a cheeseburger at McDonalds, it feels so wrong, and yet....tastes so right? At least for 5 minutes. Sometimes, a magical (or perhaps accidental) convergence of talent *can* occur between a pop "artist", their choreographer, their team of songwriters, their PR manager, their stylist and their masseuse....such as to create something actually good. At least...for a bit.

If you've got a guilty pleasure song or music video (or ten) that you've enjoyed lately, and normally wouldn't mention on a Sarah message board for fear of your own life, then mention it here :) I hereby grant you amnesty from being lynched or having other fumblers turn up at your house with a tin of petrol and box of matches...

<amnesty>...

(Rob takes deep breath, hoping they'll honour this self-announced-amnesty-with-no-real-binding-powers)

Here's one of mine. Been stuck in my head for 3 days now. I....think....I love it.

Oh where to begin?? The Rose (Bette Midler), As I lay Me Down (Sophie B. Hawkins), Downtown (Petula Clark), Stan (Eminem), Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Cyndi Lauper), Je N'en Connais Pas La Fin (Edith Piaf), Libertango (Grace Jones)... though I think the last 3 doesn't fall into the guilty pleasures category. The eternal Piaf is a great artist and I like her; the same goes for Cyndi and the amazing Grace Jones. ;)

Well, here's two that would probably tarnish my reputation as a Sarah fan forever lol (deep breath):
That's The Way It Is - Celine Dion
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tj4fajm2DQU

Immortality - Celine Dion & The BeeGees
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Spkpt1geCk

And here's another. I effing hate Madonna but I can't deny Borderline is a great tune. I love Cyndi so much to ever like Madonna at all haha!

Jessel, your guilty songs are all at least 20yrs old ;) They've stood the test of time, so actually I think you're not that guilty for liking them.

Hey Carla, is that on youtube somewhere? On the subject of Rachel Stevens, I was recently reading this and felt a bit sorry for her. One of those albums that gets huge critical reviews, but never quite sold as well as hoped.

Don't forget to post links ppl, so we can all share the guilt :)
And Ben, I agree about Heaven Is A Place On Earth.

Here it is:

This is the only version I found on YouTube, but I have another one that is different.

Yeah that's a bit sad, I think she's a decent enough pop singer (not too much scandal surrounding her and not screaming for attention) and some of her songs are actually good (not Sarah good obviously, but definitely not bad if you know what I mean). I think she classifies as another guilty pleasure :P

Hey, the 2 Celine songs are just a decade old I think, give or take a few years. ;)

Anyway, I forgot these 3:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvfZDJzwEXI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pObDmzru4_A (my favorite love song of all time ;))

Well, that's enough self-degradation for the time being.

A few more of mine...because I seem to be listening to a lot of poppy stuff lately.

"Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)" - Freemasons feat. Sophie Ellis-Bextor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1sKhvcABH8

"Parachute" - Cheryl Cole
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AWoZmAxKxg

"Fight For This Love" - Cheryl Cole
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4umc87T5UMs

"Some People" - Aylar feat. Ocean Drive
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFiuHnQ5hJk (she can't sing, but the chorus is great)

"Issues" - The Saturdays
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylJ7eNrvrug

I'm on a pop binge, just trying anything...and these are some of my favourite "discoveries" of the past week or so.
