Sarah McLachlan Plans To Open New Music School In Surrey
No one understands the benefits of music better than Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan. Since 2002, the Sarah McLachlan School of Music in Vancouver has provided free lessons to more than 500 at-risk youth. Now the superstar plans to open a new music school in Surrey.
“Music is the vehicle that we use to help give these kids an opportunity that they might not otherwise have–to learn music, to be in an inclusive, respectful environment,” said McLachlan Tuesday night.
“They get to leave all those labels that they have at the door and be exactly who they are.”
Surrey’s music program will launch next year with a permanent location for the school yet to be determined.
Surrey Board of Trade CEO Anita Huberman thinks the school could have a huge impact on the city’s at-risk youth.
“We know that crime prevention is about prevention early on with out inner-city schools,” she said. “We really feel that music can make a difference.”
McLachlan has penned many hits and won multiple awards over the years. She’s also a busy mother of two. Still, she finds time for her music school.
“I feel so lucky and blessed with all the gifts that I’ve been given through music. This is just a great way for me to thank the universe.”
