Edmonton is the ‘perfect place’ to host Women’s World Cup: Sarah McLachlan

Forget any other opinions you’re hearing — one of Canada’s most beloved musicians approves of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicking off in Edmonton.

Sarah McLachlan, a nine-time Juno and three-time Grammy award winner, will perform during the opening ceremony prior to Canada meeting China in the opening match of the quadrennial soccer tournament Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium.

“I think this is a perfect place to host an event like this because Edmonton fans, be they music fans, sport fans, they are voracious, they are loud, and they are really really passionate,” said McLachlan, a Vancouver resident.

McLachlan, whose catalogue includes smash hits such as “Building a Mystery” and “I Will Remember You,” wasn’t allowed to say what song she would preform, but did explain why she picked it.

“It’s definitely about inspiring girls to pursue their dreams,” McLachlan said. “They might get knocked down but they’re going to get right back up again.”

The Women’s World Cup is being contested from June 6 to July 5 at six different cities across Canada. Commonwealth Stadium will host 11 matches.

“It’s really thrilling. I’m a proud Canadian, and I’m a soccer mom as well, so my little girl is going to be watching, and I think the game of soccer is an amazing sport,” said McLachlan. “It’s great for women and particularly young girls being part of something bigger than themselves. I’m just super proud to be here.”

Tegan and Sara, a Calgary-born sister duo whose 2013 LP Heartthrob reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart, will also perform in the ceremony.
