Randy Bachman, Sarah McLachlan merit Walk of Fame stars

Legendary guitarist and performer Randy Bachman and singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan will be inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame this fall, organizers announced on Tuesday.

Four other inductees were announced at a news conference in Toronto. Each will get a star on the Walk of Fame, in downtown Toronto as well as a tribute at a September gala.

They are:

Actor, graphic artist and famous voice Phil Hartman.
Ottawa Rough Riders quarterback Russ Jackson.
National Ballet principal ballerina Sonia Rodriguez.
Team Canada 1972.

This year is the 40th anniversary of Team Canada’s sqeaker of a victory over Team USSR in the 1972 Hockey Summit series. The Canadian team, which included Paul Henderson, Stan Mikita, Guy Lapointe and Phil Esposito, will be honoured with a single star acknowledging their contribution to Canadian hockey history.

Bachman, who shot to fame with the Guess Who in 1965, went on to greater success with Bachman-Turner Overdrive which had monster hits such as Taking Care of Business and Let It Ride. He continues to play and produce other young artists and is host of Randy Bachman’s Vinyl Tap on CBC Radio.

McLachlan, who won Grammy Awards for I Will Remember You, Last Dance and Building a Mystery, was founder of the Lilith Fair female music tour and created an outreach program in 2003 to provide free music education to inner city youth.

Hartman spent eight seasons as a performer and writer on Saturday Night Live, created album covers for groups such as Poco, America and Crosby Stills and Nash and worked with Paul Reubens to create the Pee Wee Herman Show. He also voiced Troy McClure on The Simpsons. Hartman is being inducted posthumously, as he died in 1998.

Jackson led the Rough Riders to three Grey Cup wins in 1960, 1968 and 1969 and later coached the Toronto Argonauts before becoming a high school teacher and principal.

Rodriguez created the role of Juliet in the recent acclaimed Romeo and Juliet by Alexei Ratmansky as well as dancing roles such as Cinderella and Visilisa in The Firebird.

All will be inducted on Sept. 22 at a ceremony at the Ed Mirvish theatre in Toronto. The gala will be broadcast on Global.
