Sarah McLachlan to sing at Vogel Alcove benefit

The 2013 Vogel Alcove Arts Performance Event on April 22 will star Canadian musician, singer and songwriter Sarah McLachlan, who has sold more than 40 million recordings worldwide.

During her two-decade career, every one of McLachlan’s studio and live albums has been certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. With hit songs such as “I Will Remember You,” “Building a Mystery” and “Angel,” five of her albums have reached the Billboard Top 15.

McLachlan’s music has been recognized in Canada and the United States, and she has won eight Juno Awards and three Grammys.

Karen Hughes, president and CEO of Vogel Alcove, said that “over the past 25 years, Vogel Alcove has provided free quality child development services for more than 13,000 homeless children 6 weeks to 5 years old, Dallas’ youngest victims of poverty.

“Vogel Alcove is the only free, comprehensive early childhood education program in the city of Dallas whose primary focus is to provide free child care, counseling and case management for children and their families.”

The agency gets referrals from 22 affiliate programs, including homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters and transitional housing programs.

The April performance at the Meyerson Symphony Center will be the 22nd annual concert to raise money for Vogel Alcove. It’s the agency’s largest fundraising event of the year, and McLachlan joins an impressive list of stars who have performed at the concert, including Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, Lyle Lovett, Kenny Loggins, Michael Bolton, Liza Minnelli, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Marvin Hamlisch, Ray Charles and Itzhak Perlman.

Diane and Joel Allison, Christy and Paul Eisman, and Marisa and Peter Knag are the 2013 event co-chairs. Joel Allison is president and CEO of Baylor Health Care System. Paul Eisman is president and CEO of Alon USA, and Peter Knag is managing director for corporate development at AT&T Inc.

“Sarah McLachlan has not only a crystal clear voice but also a generous heart,” Hughes said. “She founded Lilith Fair, the first all-female traveling music festival attended by 2 million people during the summers of 1997, 1998 and 1999. The tour raised more than $7 million for charities.”

In 2003, the singer also founded the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Program to provide free music classes in inner-city schools whose music programs were reduced or abolished by budget cuts.
