Prayer Of St. Francis
written by: Sarah McLachlan and Saint Francis of Assisi
performed by: Sarah McLachlan
Lyrics
Lord make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is despair, hope
Where there is darkness, light
And where there is sadness, joy
Where there is hatred let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is despair, hope
Where there is darkness, light
And where there is sadness, joy
O divine master grant that I may
Not so much seek to be consoled as to console
To be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love
For it is in giving that we receive
And it’s in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it’s in dying that we are born to eternal life
Amen

Trivia/Notes
– Sarah made the music for this song, and the prayer was made by Saint Francis of Assisi.
– Sarah was approached by a television producer who was completing a story about a woman battling cancer. Her name is Joan. One would refer to her as a positive role model who successfully fought herself into remission using various of alternative therapy. Her methods include positive visualisation, homeopathic medicines and meditation to music. One of the artists she favours and actually meditates to is Sarah. The Prayer of Saint Francis is very personal to Joan. Her father died of cancer years back and being a minister, he passed on his favourite prayer to her. In turn, Joan decided to approach Sarah with the prayer on the off chance that it might inspire her to write a melody, which would then be used in the television piece. Sarah sat down at her piano the day after she received a copy of the prayer and the melody “just came to me”.
