Dirty Little Secret

written by: Sarah McLachlan

Lyrics

If I had the chance love
You know, I would not hesitate
To tell you all the things I never said before
Don’t tell me it’s too late

Cause I’ve relied on my illusions
To keep me warm at night
But I denied in my capacity to love
I am willing, to give up this fight
Oh, I am willing to give up this fight..

Been up all night drinking
To drown my sorrow down
Nothing seems to help me since you went away
I’m so tired of this town
Where every tongue is wagging
When every back is turned
Their telling secrets that should never be revealed
There’s nothing to be gained from this
But disaster..
Here’s a good one..
Did you hear about my friend
He’s embarrassed to be seen now
Because we
Know his sin

If I had the chance love
You know, I would not hesitate
To tell you all the things I never said before
Don’t tell me it’s too late

Cause I’ve relied on my illusions
To keep me warm at night
But I denied in my capacity to love
I am willing, to give up this fight
Oh, I am willing to give up this fight..

Sarah says

“Dirty Little Secret. Another Afterthought! I wasn’t sure if it should go on the record and my producer was even less convinced it should go on the record. It’s actually the original version. I mean, I just sat down at the piano one evening after having a lot of red whine, and I just played it for Pierre, start to finish. And the cheeky bugger had the recording on as he does sometimes and that’s what it was, pretty much untouched. And, uhm, so we always thought ‘Oh, no, we have to go and re-record this and do it better. But there is just this really nice energy to it and it was quite raw. And, you know, it’s that ‘Happy Mistake’ thing. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke. Uhm, we came to the very end of the recording process and were pretty strapped for time and so we didn’t think we were gonna get to it, so we listened to it again after, you know, just putting it aside for months and thought ‘this is really great just the way it is. Let’s just put it on and not worry about it’. And, I’m really happy we did it. I love it. And that’s actually the song I sing live at the very end of the show every night. And it’s just a really nice, sort of, capper.”
