Sarah McLachlan’s not-so-dangerous liaison.
Sarah McLachlan’s husband, Ashwin Sood, had a surprise walk-on role during the video shoot for her song “Stupid”. McLachlan, portraying unhappily married women in the 1770’s, 1870’s and 1970’s, recalls: “There was this bedroom scene in the 1970s storyline, and just as my ‘lover’ and I were going at it, my husband shows up on the set!” Adds director Sophie Muller, “That was awkward. Here I asked someone who’s not an actress to make out with a stranger – and her actual husband walks in. Everyone froze.” Everyone, that is, except the happily married McLachlan: “I just started laughing.” Keeping her in stitches was costume designer Nancy Steiner. “The pale pink 1770s dress was inspired by Barry Lyndon, and it fit Sarah like a dream,” she says. Which naturally helped McLachlan stay in character: “Having to pretend intimacy was crazy, but the custumes were transformative. This shoot was in excuse to put on fun clothes.” And maybe to kiss a cute guy without getting into too much trouble.
