Bachman&Turner/McLachlan honored during CMW
For a couple of senior citizens, Bachman & Turner were really taking care of business at the Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Awards on Thursday night at the Fairmont Royal York hotel in Toronto.
The Winnipeg duo of Randy Bachman, and Fred Turner, both 67, were inducted into Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall Of Fame and even played a quartet of chugging rock hits – Let It Roll, You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet, Let It Ride and TKOB – and got everyone on their feet and clapping along, especially during the last song.
The performance was a preview of sorts given Bachman & Turner were announced as surprise guests, along with Sammy Hagar, for Toronto band The Sadies’ club show Friday night during Canadian Music Fest, the live music part of Canadian Music Week.
“This is a very important award for me because from my early teens, this is the industry that inspired me and to be standing up here and now being recognized, never thought it would happen,” said Turner about the induction. “I’m really happy to get this honor.”
Added Bachman: “It’s been a long road. I want to thank radio, we wouldn’t be here without radio. For every musician who writes a song and has a dream, the only way that gets heard is through radio.”
Earlier in the evening, Vancouver-based Sarah McLachlan received the Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award for her two decades of work with WorldVision, among other charities, and then sat down at the piano to play three songs on her own – Loving You Is Easy, Forgiveness, and crowd favourite Angel.
McLachlan is currently on tour and returns to Toronto to play Massey Hall on March 17-18.
