Sarah McLachlan Talks “Illusion,” Lilith Fair

She has spent the four years since her last studio album raising her two small children. But with “Laws Of Illusion” — which was released today (June 15), Sarah McLachlan is back with a new batch of songs, the revival of her Lilith tour, and a fresh confidence to be even more emotionally honest in her music, as she told Billboard.com when she sat down for a video interview recently.

“I feel like I really tapped into a pretty honest emotional place for myself as a lyricist,” McLachlan says of her “Illusion” songs. “There’s a broad spectrum of emotions.”

She calls “Loving You Is Easy,” the first single, “a real departure for me because it’s so light and effervescent and frothy…. It’s that delicious feeling of the possibilities of lust and passion and love. It’s like being in high school.”

“Laws Of Illusion” doesn’t shy away from darker feelings, however. McLachlan says its themes include “all the emotional paths that you take: the denial, the anger, the pain, the sadness and then the growth.”

The album is only one of the boxes checked off on McLachlan’s summer to-do list. Her Lilith tour, the woman-oriented music fest she famously fronted in the late ’90s, comes back from dormancy starting on June 27 featuring a lineup that includes a range of female artists from Erykah Badu to Colbie Caillat to Carly Simon.

“There are women in every genre having a lot of success,” McLachlan says. “Why not celebrate that?”
