Kumbaya Festival

More than a concert, the Kumbaya Festival is an all-Canadian party with a difference. It shows people care. The third annual event takes place Saturday at Toronto’s Molson Amphitheatre with proceeds going to benefit people living with AIDS. The first two festivals resulted in more than $350,000 going to charitable groups. MuchMusic plans live coverage of the event, starting at 5 p.m. EDT. The TV audience can make pledges via a toll-free number or the Internet. Live Kumbaya, an album containing highlights of last year’s show, was released Wednesday on Warner Music. For organizer Molly Johnson, the festival also represents a measuring stick for Canadian music. “Ten years ago, you couldn’t have done this. No way,” the Toronto singer said Wednesday. “Now, I have to beat them off with a stick. “I say no way more than I say yes and it’s the hardest thing I do. And the only way I get around it is by not putting myself in the show frankly… The line is there’s no room at the inn.” There are some 60 bands and solo performers scheduled this year, mixing and matching on the Amphitheatre mainstage and a smaller stage at the back. The lineup includes Blue Rodeo, Spirit of the West, Barenaked Ladies, Holly Cole, Daniel Lanois, Junkhouse, I Mother Earth, Change of Heart, Lori Yates, the Killjoys, Alex Lifeson of Rush, Salome Bey, the Odds, Dream Warriors, Crash Vegas, The Pursuit of Happiness, Moxy Fruvous, Bootsauce and Sarah McLachlan.

The EP will have its audience, though, as evidenced by McLachlan’s large and loyal fan base on the Internet. People with access to CD-ROM will be delighted by the multimedia goodies put forth here at no extra cost. Track-by-track audio samples from the musician’s three full-length albums are available, as are video clips, “home movies” from the studio, photos, original artwork, concert footage and a travelogue of McLachlan’s trip to Thailand and Cambodia with the World Vision organization– all accompanied by McLachlan’s own narration.
