Sarah McLachlan “Shine On Tour” review
Last night I got to see Sarah McLachlan kick of her Shine On Tour. It was such a fun show! I had VIP tickets so I got to give Sarah a hug and say, “hello” before the show started. It was a small, brief meet and greet. Sarah was happily taking pictures with everyone, but was not signing things. I think Sarah recognized me. Well, she seemed to as I went in for a hug. Her face lit up and said, “Hello, how are you?” We had a brief chat. I told her my mom said, to say “hello” and Sarah asked how she was doing. I gave her a card and told her I knew we wouldn’t have much time to talk and she said, things had been a bit crazy. I got 2 photos taken with her, 1 on my camera and 1 on my phone. She had a look at my phone with me to see if the photo turned out well. It did!! It was such a beautiful evening. I was afraid it was going to rain, but as a friend put it, “The sun shined on for Sarah”.
She played a mixture of songs throughout the night. I wasn’t able to get the set list, so don’t remember all of them. She commented that she knew not everyone was familiar with her new album so she was going to sprinkle them in amongst some of her older songs. She said, she just loves playing the news songs. She opened the night with “Fresh and Blood” from her new album. Sarah and the band rocked it! I don’t remember what she sang next. My brain is still processing the whole night, a lot happened. Other songs I remember her playing were, “Monsters”, “Beautiful Girl”, “Adia”, “Angel”, “Brink Of Destruction”, “World On Fire”, “Song For My Father”, “Love Beside Me”, “Ice Cream”, “Sound That Love Makes”, “Possession”, “I Will Remember You”, “Stupid”, “Fallen”, “Answer”, “Fear”, “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy”, “Sweet Surrender”, and “U Want Me 2”.
There may have been more songs, but this is what I remember. And they were not in this order. I was surprised she didn’t end the show with “Ice Cream”, instead she had us all snapping along to “The Sound That Love Makes”. It was a great way to end the night.
She had two groups of fans sit on stage for part of the show. She was very cute in how she was interacting with them while she sang.
I was hoping she would have had the cello player on tour with her, but she didn’t. All those in the band were awesome though.
She commented about “Brink of Destruction” before she started to sing it. She said it started out being a sad song, but she got so tired of writing it, so decided to make it about the man she starting seeing.
She did the Q &A from the hat again, which is always fun. There were some fun questions people asked. The questions led to fun stories such as meeting Joan Baez (one of her music influences) and wanting to shake her hand, but Sarah had just come out of a port-a-potty and couldn’t wash her hands, so she didn’t want to shake Joan’s hands because she felt hers were gross from the port-a-potty. Apparently Joan was very kind though and wasn’t bothered by it.
I love Sarah. She’s such a breathe of fresh air. This week as been a tough one for me, but being there seeing Sarah sing helped some of the struggles of the week wash off. I felt peaceful. She’s playing again tonight. It’s so tempting to go again. I believe the show is sold out though and I really do need to be saving my money. I can’t wait to see/hear others stories of their experiences of seeing Sarah this summer.
